We know and love German Shepherds. Most of us have always known them as German Shepherds, but did you know that at one point in their relatively brief history, they were known as Alsatians? It’s true.

German Shepherds gained popularity mostly due to the soldiers of WWI praising their abilities. However, with rising anti-German sentiment in the West due to WWI and during the lead up to WWII, breeders were worried that the name German Shepherd would hinder the breed’s popularity.

Similarly, the city of Kitchener, Ontario was once know as New Berlin.

It was because of this that the German Shepherd was renamed the Alsatian after the French-German border town of Alsace.

Like Freedom Fries, the name didn’t stick and most people might look at you funny if you refer to a German Shepherd as an Alsatian.
