Greyhound racing has a long history of abuse, neglect, and overworking dogs for “performance enhancement.” We are overjoyed that the state of Arizona has finally abolished this sport, but also sad for the dogs currently competing. Most racing dogs will be left homeless, abandoned, or worse. Some dogs will be shipped to other states to compete, while the lucky ones will return to their owners.

Rescue groups, like the Arizona Greyhound Rescue, are already working hard to find potential homes for the expected dogs. They are preparing to take two at a time, starting as early as next week. Many of these dogs will need veterinary care, which will be a pricey endeavor. The last racing season is scheduled to end December 31st, 2016.

President of Arizona Greyhound Rescue, Jean Williams was quoted in an interview “We’re also looking for donations, for one thing, because we have to vet these animals. Then we are looking for foster homes, so they can learn how to be a pet. Then adoptions.”

A few ex-racing dogs are ready to train for their next job as service dogs, with the program Heartfelt Hounds. These dogs will go on to work with people suffering from anxiety and post traumatic stress disorder.

“…they are very loving, and soft,” said Williams. “They just want to cuddle with you.”
