You’ve lost a family member. There are no words. This isn’t easy. It may not ever get easier. You need time to process. You need time to grieve. You need time to reflect on all the wonderful times you had together: the love, the cuddles, the laughs, the love, the frustration, the pride, the love. Did we mention the love?
Take the time you need. You deserve it. You will process all you need to process. You will find that the pain of loss is replaced with the joy of memory. Keep them close to your heart and they never truly leave you.
While it may be true that you can’t cuddle a memory, you’ll be amazed at how warm that memory will keep you. You’ll be amazed by how comforted you are.
You will always feel that piece of you missing, but your dog will always be with you. They want you to be happy. Your happiness made them happy. You gave them a wonderful life and they’d like you to keep going.
Your dog would want you to spread that happiness to as many people and other dogs as you can. They’d probably even appreciate the irony of you licking a face or two after telling them not to for so many years.
OK. Don’t lick any faces that don’t want to be licked. I think you get the point, though.
You got this. It’s okay to be sad. Focus on the happy memories if you can and things will get better.
